AURORA-RMIT 101 SOLAR CAR RIGHT ON SCHEDULE AT PORT AUGUSTA 12,000 KM Achieved. New 780 KM Day Record Set

Continuing to demonstrate outstanding reliability, the Aurora-RMIT 101 solar car and its 9 member support crew exceeded 12,000 KM of their Around Australia Challenge as they rolled into Port Augusta on Day 22 of their epic journey.

This outstanding volunteer team established a third World Record in travelling 780 KM on solar energy alone - as they covered the distance from Nullabor to Port Augusta on 17 January 2002.

Already the team has smashed the World Distance Record for a solar car journey in reaching Broome on Day 14. They followed this with a record speed achievement on Day 15 by setting a 111.2 kph average over 100 km on the road.

The team was welcomed into Adelaide at 1.00 pm (CST) on Friday, 18 January (Day 23) by the Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Bruno Ventura and leader of the Democrats, Senator Natasha Stott Despoja.

One day remains for this journey with the team scheduled to return home to Melbourne at 5.00 pm on Saturday, 19 January 2002. The journey's end point will be at Parliament House steps, in Melbourne.

The celebration will be short-lived as at 9.00 am Sunday, 20 January, the Aurora-RMIT 101 solar car will lead off the near 600 entries of the RACV Great Australian Rally from the Melbourne Town Hall, sharing this honour with a 1907 Wolseley Siddeley.
