Race Update - 18-Oct-1999

Today has been a slow day. We have been in cloud and some rain all day except for the last hour and a half, so all teams have been doing their best to juggle their strategy and their battery capacity. The lead cars have all bunched up a bit. We were passed during the day by Queen's University, who at the end of the day are about 6 km ahead of us on corrected time. Tamagawa ran out of battery capacity and fell back in the field. Having closed the gap on us considerably are NTU's Desert Rose and Queensland's Sunshark, and behind them are Lake Tuggeranong College of Canberra. This means that of the first five teams, four are Australian.

On the road

We are stopped for the night about 20 km south of the Devil's Marbles, around 1124 km from Darwin. This puts our speed for the day at 58.2 km/h, which shows what slow weather it was. It was a day for patiently working with the telemetry data to get the best out of the batteries. Once again, the car ran beautifully; the only stops we had were for driver changes.

Tomorrow we expect sunnier weather, so cars can be expected to run more on their merits compared with today. We hear too that the Solar Motions team from the USA has recovered from their accident damage and are moving through the field, so they must still be considered a serious contender.

Roy and Lawrie from Whirlpool have been with us thoughout the day, and have been good team members. They have promoted us to all their affiliated people in towns along the way, raising a lot of interest.

Here is a picture (taken by the Uni of NSW people) of us at our camp at the end of the day, from their website. (This site has lots of good stuff about the race. Take a look.)
